Note Recognition

Note recognition training helps you quickly learn to recognize notes and their names and position on both sheet music and piano keyboard. In addition, note timing anlaysis helps you rapidly learn correct note values. On the pre-training screen (as shown below) you can:

Chords

This feature helps you quickly learn to recognize triad chords and inversions. It can also be used to experiment with chord progressions which is great if you want to try to compose your own songs. Each skill level has different features, as shown below:

Beginner Chord Training

Intervals

Intervals training helps you quickly learn to recognize intervals betwen notes in both melodic and harmonic positions. On the pre-training screen (as shown below) you can:

Information

App description: Shows a concise description of what the App does.

App version: Shows the App version and build number.

Show full version: Launches Safari and loads the App Store page for the full version.

Credits: Shows developer involvement and third-party acknowledgments.

General enquiries: Launches the mail application with a new email to send to the developer. Use this one for enquiries of a general nature.

Report a possible bug: Use this to send an email if you think you may have found a bug.

Make a suggestion: All suggestions about improvements to the App are welcome. Bear in mind, though that any suggestions submitted will become the intellectual property of the developer, should they be implemented.

Settings

This screen is for settings that will not be changed very often and also provides a way to clear all App settings.

Note naming convention:

Allows selection of either Western or Fixed Do note naming. Western naming uses the letters "C,D,E,F,G,A,B" whereas fixed do uses "Do,Re,Me,Fa,Sol,La,Si". This setting affects the note names shown on the piano keyboards and inside note heads and chord dots.

Clear all settings

Selecting this option resets all settings in the app to the default values.

Note range selection

After tapping a piano keyboard map the corresponding note range selection screen will be shown. The upper and lower limit of notes to use for training can be set by sliding the up and down arrows. A white box to toggle to note range selection for the alternate clef will be shown if grand staff was selected on the pre-training screen.

Training Mode

Song Selection / Random Count or Time selection

There are various training modes available depending on the training feature selected. You can train using a song, a random sequence of notes, chords or intervals using a specific count or time period. Training with songs is only available with the note recognition feature. Training with a song is also a great way to hone your rhythm skills as the rating (results) screen for note recognition also shows a note timing analysis.

Control Panel

The following list shows the buttons that may appear in the control panel at various times and explains what they are for:

Start or stop training

After adjusting the settings for your training session on the pre-training screen, press the green play button to launch the session. You can press the red stop button at any time during training to end the session but a rating for the session will not be calculated unless you have made at least 20 correct selections.

Sounds

Turn sound on or off. When on, note and chord sounds will be heard when keys are pressed and when a correct selection is made. In addition, when a new best score is acheived, a "cheer" sound will be heard. All of these sounds can be muted by tapping the button to the off setting without having to turn down the volume.

Note names on piano keyboard

Turn on or off the showing of note names on the piano keyboard. When on, note names will be shown on all piano keyboards in both the note recognition feature and the chords feature. When 'fixed Do' is selected this button will show "Do" instead of "C".

Keyboard map

Turn on or off the showing the keyboard map during training. When on the keyboard map will be shown on the right hand side of the screen. This option is only applicable to beginner skill level in note recognition training. For all othe skiil levels and features the keyboard map will not be shown.

Accidentals

Turn on or off the showing of accidentals during training. For note recognition training only with skill levels intermediate and above. For advanced skill level, only applicable when key of C is selected. Also, only for training with random notes. When all of the avorementioned criteria are met, accidentals will be randomly included.

Correct selection

Turn on or off the showing of correct selection. When on and a wrong selection is made during training, the correct key or button will be highlighted in green.


Note names in note-head

Turn on or off the showing of note names in note-head. For note recognition, when this option is on the note name will be shown in the note head for notes that have an implied sharp or flat for the selected key signature. For advanced chord training, when this option is on the root note name will be shown in note head.


Root note in chord dots

Turn on or off the showing of root note in chord dots. When on the root note name will be shown in the corresponding green chord dot on the piano keyboard.


Minor or Major chords

Select either Major or Minor chords. The capital 'M' option selects major chords whilst the lower case 'm' selects minor chords for training.


Melodic or Harmonic intervals

Select either Melodic Intervals or Harmonic Intervals for training.
